                                   15th Annual Book Writing Contest         

Entry Deadline:       Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 9 pm        

Contest Winners:    Notified week of March 9th  

Receptions:             Grades 1-3 on Monday, March 30th, 7 pm

                                    Grades 4-6 on Wednesday, April 1st, 7 pm

Instructions

v     Students in grades 1-6 (including homeschoolers) can participate by writing a book (short story) by themselves or with a friend(s) in the same grade.  One entry per student.  The book must be the student’s work with no outside assistance except for typing.

v     The story can be on any subject.  It can, but does not have to be illustrated.  It may be typed or hand-written. 

v     Text should be limited to 15 pages.  Please number the pages.  For binding purposes, leave at least a 1” margin on every edge of the pages.  Entries should not measure more than 8 ½ x 11.  Artist pencils, non-smear markers, or crayons can be used for the illustrations. 

v     Entries must include a title page with title of the story, author/illustrator’s name, grade, school, home address, phone number, and e-mail address, if available.  Include the pertinent information for each author/illustrator.  A creative cover for the book is recommended.

v     Although this is not a school assignment, all the qualities of good writing including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure are important.

 

Prizes

v     1st and 2nd grades.  Prizes will be awarded for each grade level based on:

      Best story (plot)

      Most creative (referring to the format and hand drawn illustrations)

v     3rd and 4th grades will be judged separately.   5th and 6th grades will be judged together.   Prizes will be awarded for each level based  on:

      Best story (plot)

      Best developed characters

      Most creative (referring to format and hand drawn illustrations)

 

All winners will receive a bookstore gift certificate.

 

Winning entries will be bound by grade level and added to the William Jeanes Library collection.  1st and 2nd place winners will receive a bound copy of their book to keep, but must provide the additional copy to be bound.
